A message from Jeremy

Dearborn
Public Schools
In
the 1830’s a small one-room log cabin named Miller School was
the humble beginning of the Dearborn Public Schools.
Auto giant and legend Henry Ford attended the dedication of
the second building, to be called Miller School.
170 years later, a new Miller School provides students and
teachers a modern facility with an environment designed for today’s
curriculum.
Miller is just one of 29 Dearborn Schools that make up the
7th largest school district in the state. Our long
history has created a strong and stable school district. Over the
years Dearborn Schools have been recognized as a leader in
educational programs, academic excellence, and athletic champions.
We are proud of the success of our students and the staff who
worked to bring about that success.
Meeting
the daily needs of 17,300 students requires the latest technology,
a strong curriculum, and efficient facilities. However, the
average age of a school building in Dearborn is over 50 years old.
Changing technology has brought about changes in the job
market, creating a need for programs that teach new skills, and
increasing student enrollment has brought all of our schools to
capacity.
These conditions are now the challenges that face the
Dearborn Public Schools.
On
March 12, 2001, recommendations were presented to the Board of
Education that offered solutions to these challenges. These were
only recommendations and are not a final proposal.
The Board of Education must consider many factors when
deciding on what works best to meet the needs of the students.
One item that is part of the Board’s decision-making
process is examining how the community feels about the proposed
items.
Now
is the time to voice your opinion. Please take a moment to visit
our website at www.dearbornschools.org
to take part in a special On-Line Focus Group. This special Focus
Group section of the website provides information on six items
currently being looked at by the Board of Education. After
reviewing each item, you will have the opportunity to provide the
district with your thoughts and opinions. There is also a section
that provides information on how the Task Force and Working Group
developed these proposed items.
Thank
you for your interest in the Dearborn Public Schools.
